Where and how to go diving in Riviera Maya
Riviera Maya is one of those destinations that has it all: idyllic beaches, Mayan ruins to explore, out-of-this-world cenotes… and an underwater world well worth discovering. If you’re thinking about diving in Mexico, this corner of the Caribbean is one of the best places to do it. Whether it’s your first time or you’re already experienced, here’s where to dive in Riviera Maya, what you need to know and why it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
Is Riviera Maya a good place to dive?
Spoiler: it is, very much so. We’ll tell you why it’s worth diving here, whether it’s safe and which option is best if you’re just starting out.
Why dive in Riviera Maya?
Few places pack so many types of dives into such a small area. You can explore coral reefs off the coast, dive into freshwater caves (the famous cenotes), swim among turtles or even go down to see bull sharks in their natural habitat. On top of that, the Caribbean Sea offers pleasant temperatures all year round, good visibility and gentle currents, making it ideal for both a discover scuba dive and technical dives.
Is it safe to dive in Riviera Maya?
Yes, as long as you dive with certified centers and follow the basic recommendations. Local instructors are very used to working with first-time divers, and all activities use well-maintained equipment and well-established protocols. Plus, since it’s such an established tourist area, there are medical services nearby and good infrastructure.
Snorkeling vs. diving: which should you choose if you’re a beginner?
Snorkeling is ideal if you just want a first taste of the underwater world, without complications or heavy gear. But if you’d like to go a step further, diving for beginners in Riviera Maya is very accessible and much more exciting: you’ll go deeper, see more marine life and feel like you’re part of the landscape, not just looking down from above.
If you’re still not sure, you can read more about the differences in this guide on what snorkeling is and how it’s done.

We also organize gentler recreational dives for those who prefer to explore the seabed without so much adrenaline.
Akumal: diving with turtles in calm waters
Akumal is known for its sea turtles, which swim close to shore in calm, shallow waters. It’s ideal if you’re looking for something relaxed, without traveling too far or committing to big dives. Here, diving with turtles is often combined with snorkeling, since marine life can be seen even in shallow water.
A great way to enjoy it is our combined tour to Tulum, Akumal and a private cenote, perfect for visiting several places in one day.
Types of diving you can do
In Riviera Maya you can try different diving styles depending on your level and what you’d like to discover underwater.
- Reef diving: ideal for beginners or anyone looking for a relaxed dive, the reefs are full of color and marine life. They’re also usually close to shore and in shallow water.
- Cenote diving: a one-of-a-kind experience. It takes place in freshwater caverns with great visibility and lets you explore rock formations and underground passages. It’s more technical, but highly recommended if you already have some experience.
- Bull shark diving: available only in season (November to March), it’s a thrilling activity designed for certified divers. It’s always done under strict safety measures.
- Other options: there’s also night diving, wreck diving and technical diving for those looking for a bigger challenge.

What do you need to dive as a beginner?
If you’ve never dived before, don’t worry: Riviera Maya is a perfect place to start. For a discover scuba dive, you don’t need experience or certification, just the ability to swim and the desire to try something new. Everything takes place in a safe environment, with instructors who explain step by step how to move underwater.
And if you enjoy the experience, you can take the next step with one of the diving courses in Riviera Maya, such as Open Water Diver, which lets you dive anywhere in the world down to 18 meters.
Best time of year to dive in Riviera Maya
One of the great advantages of this region is that you can dive all year round, thanks to its tropical climate and warm waters. Even so, there are a few factors to consider when choosing the best time.
High season (December to April) brings calmer seas and better visibility, but also more people and somewhat higher prices. From May to October, there are fewer divers and more deals, although seaweed may appear. Here’s more about sargassum in Riviera Maya, in case you want to avoid it.
If you’re after bull shark diving in Playa del Carmen, you’ll need to come between November and March, when they’re most present.
Check out the best time to travel to Riviera Maya: as you can see, any time is good, but each has its own features. We look forward to seeing you!
